jo+kapi (Singapore)

jo+kapi is a collaboration between media artists and creative technologists Jo Ho & Kapilan Naidu. After meeting at a group exhibition, the pair found they shared overlapping research interests in generative art, artificial intelligence, and rapidly transforming modes of both creating and consuming digital art. They presented their first project in January of 2022.

Along with creating new work using emerging technology to explore its effects on society and human perceptions of rapid mechanization and advancement of computational tools, jo+kapi also produce artist-led exhibitions to showcase media art in Singapore, a city that traditionally focuses on fine arts. In the last two years, jo+kapi were granted funding from the National Art Council of Singapore to produce two exhibitions, the first, an installation-as-exhibition that critiques the perceived value of digital art, and the second, an exhibition with five new works exploiting real-time generation and/or automated tools.

Jo Ho

Jo Ho (b. 1991, Singapore) is an artist working with emerging technology to explore human perceptions and imaginations of our rapidly advancing computational tools. She often questions the conception that digital assets are immaterial by exploring what she calls ‘digital corporeality’, the bridging of the digital with the corporeal.

Jo works with interactive installations, moving images, projection mapping, digital paintings using data and machine-learned graphics as material, and virtual experiences created with game engines. Recently, she has been incorporating performance in her practice to further extend emerging digital tools into live- and body-based work.

Kapilan Naidu

Kapilan Naidu is a media artist, designer and technologist with a keen interest in exploring the effects of rapid mechanization and computational supremacy in modern society. Using interactivity and real-time data as mediums, his works span across generative images, animations, sound, mixed-reality experiences, screen-based installations and computer programs.

He is deeply inspired by the emergent nature of procedural algorithms, where they take on a central role in guiding the visual outcome of his works. This exploration into the creative partnership between humans and machines also informs his current research into trans-humanism and artificially intelligent systems.
